About this property

Welcome to The Grand Hotel

Situated on a lively shopping street in Lerwick, The Grand Hotel occupies an old stone building with turrets, reflecting a blend of historic charm and casual comfort. The property offers harbour views and features a restaurant and bar, providing guests with dining options on-site. While the hotel lacks air-conditioning, pool, and fitness facilities, it includes free Wi-Fi, a kid-friendly environment, and smoke-free areas.

The accommodation is known for its characterful older decor, with some recent refurbishments such as new beds and heating in rooms. Guest feedback highlights the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff alongside thoughtfully prepared breakfasts cooked to order. Some reviewers note the absence of elevators and the need to carry luggage up stairs, as well as ongoing maintenance contributing to a mix of well-maintained and aging areas within the property.

Conveniently located just a few minutes’ walk from Lerwick Harbour, the hotel is close to local attractions including the Shetland Museum & Archives, the Broch of Clickimin, and Fort Charlotte. Its central position on Commercial Street provides easy access to shops, cafes, and transport links, making it suitable for visitors looking to explore the town and surrounding area.

Beautiful older decor. Serves breakfast only. Owner and staff very helpful. Could not connect to open wifi, not sure of issue, likely my device. Close to all good restaurants and shops in Lerwick. Free public parking area is at rear of property. No elevators, must carry luggage up a few flights of stairs to room.

This place was delightful ! Lisa was a wonderful hostess! The hotel has so much charm! We flew in from the USA and had such a wonderful experience there! Made our trip so worthwhile. The food Mickey cooked for us was out of this world! Thank you for your hospitality, We'll be back! Loved the Vikings too!

A room with a lovely view. They are refurbishing. The room had a new bed and heater. We appreciated the large towels and plenty of tea/coffee. Servicing of the room was excellent. We had a mixed experience at breakfast. Chef was friendly and helpful, but portions large and too much toast. The other breakfast staff were not attentive and could not order tea. Some areas of the hotel would benefit from a coat of paint.

Did not stay in a room. Place is in the town center, has generically nice decor, and a great bar. While lacking in atmosphere, the man who runs the bar was a great guy, the locals were friendly, the prices were the cheapest in Lerwick and there was a great selection of alcohol. Wifi worked well too. All around great time was had the night I drank here.

Great service and excellent location with free parking. Mickey and Janet were fantastic, very kind, friendly and helpful to all guests offering suggestions of places to visit and things to see and do. The breakfast was brilliant, freshly cooked and great quality. Excellent choice on offer and all cooked to order. The manager Harvey was very helpful. Lots of excellent local shops and cafe’s etc close to the hotel on the street where they were also filming a new episode of Shetland.

The Grand Hotel was a lovely place to stay in Lerwick and I’d definitely recommend it for anyone who is staying in Lerwick. The hotel is right in the middle of town and very close to the bus stops, so it’s easy to access other sights of the city. The staff were SO kind to us and honestly the best part of our stay. We booked 2 twin beds, with a pretty cute view out of our window. The light in our room’s bathroom took a bit to flicker on, and the sink had very little water coming out from the hot side; the shower also had very low water pressure. The beds were relatively comfortable. Breakfast was served from about 6 to 10am, with a lot of options to choose from. The pub in the hotel had a lot of options as well, with reasonably priced drinks, and was nice to sit in. The ambience of the hotel was very retro but in a good way and I liked it a lot. Overall I’d give my stay an 8.5/10 .

Lovely old hotel with a young new owner working hard to restore faded glory. Great breakfast, never seen as big a cereal selection and the cooked breakfast will have you fed to dinner time. Staff very pleasant and as I say the owner of trying so hard to make it a nice hotel . First time anyone from a hotel has jumped in my car to direct me to the car park If Basil Faulty is the epitome of the bad hotel host, the Grand has the anti-Faulty

The rooms are okay for the price and location. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was really good. Cooked fresh not sat at the counter the whole morning. Hospitality was top notch

Quaint and quirky. Bedroom and bathroom windows did not shut properly and doors to the bathroom and an airing cupboard constantly rattled in the draft. On the plus side a super friendly and helpful couple of hosts and great company, plus a super comfy bed and a charming old building right in the very centre of the town and close to all the local bus routes.

I love this hotel. There is so much character here. There’s obviously work being done on it and good on the owner. The areas that have been done look incredible. The breakfast area, for one, is magnificent. The service is amazing, the breakfast is very tasty and freshly cooked to order and the beds are comfortable. This hotel is a beautiful older lady waiting to get her hall gown back on and I think this new owner is doing just that. Will definitely stay here again.
